Sälen is a collective name for several ski areas on the same mountain massif, which provides a large and varied lift system. SkiStar's common SkiPass includes Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället. In addition to these, Stöten is a separate resort with its own lifts and its own lift pass. If you add up all the major facilities, the total in the area is around 120 lifts, where the variation between seasons is explained by how you count conveyor belts and toddler lifts.
Lift mix and development
The lift park consists of a mix of express chairs, gondola, classic anchor lifts, button lifts and conveyor belts in beginner zones. Hundfjället has a modern gondola that efficiently feeds skiers up from the valley and several express lifts reduce waiting times in the busiest sectors. Lindvallen and Tandådalen have been upgraded in recent years with fast chairlifts and expanded children's areas that make the first turns safer and more accessible. Högfjället links the system to Lindvallen, making it easy to get around without needing a car.
What does this mean for your experience?
What does this mean for your experience? More and faster lifts mean shorter queues and a better spread of skiers across the mountain, especially during busy periods. For families, conveyor belts and button lifts close to the accommodation mean children get up and running quickly, while experienced skiers benefit from the express chairs which provide more vertical metres per day. With a SkiPass you can move freely between the four SkiStar areas, while a day in Stöten requires a separate card. The practical approach is to plan days according to the weather, starting where the lifts open earliest and utilising the periphery when the main flow becomes denser.
Keep an eye on open lifts
As the number of lifts and their status can change between seasons and days, it's always good to check open lifts close to departure. But as a whole, Sälen offers one of the most comprehensive systems in the Nordic region, with everything from beginner-friendly runs to fast infrastructure that gets you back up quickly for the next run.
