The slopes

Skiing in Stöten – from the children’s slope to the steep slopes

Stöten is the ski area within Sälenfjällen with the greatest vertical drop, and it is home to some of the area’s most challenging runs. At the same time, the resort is designed with families in mind: the children’s area with the ski school is close to the lifts, and most of the runs converge at the same base, so that groups can easily split up and meet up again for lunch.

The lift pass is specific to Stöten and is not valid at SkiStar’s resorts, which also means that the queues are shorter than at Lindvallen and Tandådalen during the school holiday weeks. If you’d like to ski across several systems during your stay, there is Sälen’s other ski resorts 20–35 minutes’ drive away. Winter

Winter off-piste – cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding

Summers

Summer in Stöten – hiking and cycling in mountain terrain

Once the snow has melted, Stöten becomes a starting point for hiking and cycling in the mountains, with trails beginning right at the complex. Summer at Sälen is quiet in a way that winter never is, and the mountain cabin serves just as well as a base then: long days out and about, dinner at home and a sauna in the evening.

Suggested routes can be found in the guidebooks hiking in Sälen and summer in Sälen, and anyone looking for a bit of pace will find Sälen’s cycle park in Lindvallen.

The story

The history of Stöten

The Stöten ski resort opened in 1976, ten years after Hundfjället, and in 1990 a World Cup slalom event was held here. The fact that the area is still run with its own ski lift system and its own ski pass goes some way towards explaining the more laid-back atmosphere. The full story of how Sälen grew from mountain pastures into a ski resort can be found on the page about History of Sälen.
