When is Vasalopp Week – and why is Sälen booked first?
The Vasaloppet is traditionally held on the first Sunday in March, and the week leading up to it is filled with seeding races and open runs such as Tjejvasan, Öppet Spår and Halvvasan. This means that Sälen isn’t just busy for one weekend – the pressure is on for up to ten days. As the start is in Sälen whilst the finish is in Mora, most skiers prefer to stay on the Sälen side: here, you wake up close to the starting gates, avoid long journeys at dawn and can prepare in peace and quiet. Add to that the fact that many participants return year after year and rebook their accommodation straight after crossing the finish line, and you’ll understand why bookings fill up so quickly. Anyone who waits until the autumn is often left with whatever’s left – far from the start or the wrong size for their group.
Stay close to the start: Berga by, Sälens village and Lindvallen
The start is at Berga by, just south of the village of Sälen. The closest accommodation to the start is in the valley itself – Berga, the village of Sälen and the areas around Sälfjällstorget – from where you can reach the starting pens in a matter of minutes. Lindvallen and Högfjället are also excellent choices: here you’ll be staying up in the mountains, with a short drive down to the start, whilst also having access to groomed trails for your final practice runs. During the race week itself, transport is usually organised between the mountain resorts and the start area, which makes logistics straightforward even from Tandådalen and Hundfjället. If you’d like to read more about the race’s history, the route and all the races taking place during the week, you’ll find Everything about Vasaloppet in our guide.
Så tidigt bör du boka stugan till Vasaloppet (och vad som händer om du väntar)
The rule of thumb is simple: book your accommodation at the same time as you secure your starting place, ideally 9–12 months in advance. The most attractive houses near the start are often already booked up by spring of the previous year. If you wait until November–December, there’s a high risk you’ll have to compromise – longer distances, fewer beds or a house lacking the amenities that make race week enjoyable. One tip is to be flexible with your booking: many houses are booked from Sunday to Sunday during Vasaloppet week, but shorter stays may become available closer to the time as teams adjust their squad sizes. Feel free to sign up for our newsletter and let us know your dates and the number of people, and we’ll get back to you when something suitable becomes available – our personalised service often makes the difference between ”fully booked” and ”we’ve sorted it out”.
Accommodation for teams, clubs and supporters
Vasaloppet is, above all, a team experience. Clubs, corporate teams and groups of friends travelling together want to be able to get together around the pitch-side bench, over dinner and for tactical discussions – and in that respect, a large venue beats all options with separate rooms. Our large holiday cottages for 10–20 people provides space for the whole team under one roof, with spacious communal areas, fully equipped kitchens and space to prepare their kit. For supporters and families, having a house of their own is just as valuable: whilst the skiers are competing against Mora, there’s a cosy base to return to, where they can cook lunch and celebrate in the evening. If there are more of you than a single house can accommodate, it’s often possible to combine several properties close to one another – just ask us; we know the valley well.
Vad kostar det att hyra stuga under Vasaloppsveckan?
Vasalopp Week is peak season, and prices are on a par with the busiest weeks of the winter half-term. Exact rates vary depending on the size, location and standard of the house, but worked out per person per night, a large house often proves surprisingly good value when all the beds are filled – especially compared with hotel rooms in the local area, which are few and far between and get booked up early. Also bear in mind the bigger picture: a house with its own kitchen saves both time and restaurant costs during a week when energy levels and routines are half the battle. Would you like to hyra stor stuga i Sälen till loppveckan It’s worth comparing the total cost per person for the whole week rather than the price per night – and booking before the choice becomes more limited.
After the race – sauna, recovery and dinner
Few things beat the feeling of returning to a proper mountain cabin after a 9-mil walk along the trail. The heat in the sauna soothes tired shoulders, and a long dinner with the whole group is the classic way to round off a day of racing. Several of our lodges have spacious relaxation areas – one cottage with a sauna and spa makes recovery part of the experience rather than a necessity. If you’d like to take it a step further, you can arrange for a private chef to cater the victory dinner, so that no one in your group has to spend time in the kitchen after crossing the finish line. The day after the race, the valley is also wonderfully peaceful – perfect for a leisurely lap on the trails or a few hours on the slopes before heading home.
