Journey time – which town is easiest to reach?

Both destinations are in Dalarna, but Sälen is about an hour closer for travellers coming from the south. From Stockholm, the journey by car to Sälen takes around four and a half to five hours, whilst the journey to Idre takes closer to six. From Gothenburg and western Sweden, the pattern is the same – the route to Sälen via Värmland or western Dalarna is both shorter and quicker. Sälen also offers more options for those not driving: bus services, trains to Mora or Borlänge with connections, and flights to Scandinavian Mountains Airport just west of the mountains. For a long weekend, that extra hour makes all the difference – it means an extra evening in the sauna rather than on the road. Idre’s location further north, on the other hand, gives a sense of getting further away from everyday life, which some see as a value in itself.

Ski systems: size, variety and queues

Idre Fjäll’s hallmark is the four-leaf clover: a compact mountain offering skiing in all four directions, which means you’re likely to find sheltered slopes and good snow whatever the wind – and short distances between everything. The layout is easy to navigate and child-friendly, but those who ski for several days on end will discover its limitations: the number of runs is limited compared to Sälen. The Sälen mountains offer many times more runs spread across Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället, ranging from gentle family areas to steep Väggen slopes – plus Stöten and Kläppen within easy reach for day trips. Both resorts excel in this respect – child-friendliness is Dalafjällen’s speciality. Idre Fjäll’s compact layout is a real advantage when travelling with young children: everything is close by, and the layout makes everyday life straightforward. Summer and bare ground – what do the resorts have to offer?

Both destinations are increasingly focusing on the summer season. Idre offers hiking, cycling and fishing in magnificent natural surroundings, with Städjan as its landmark. Sälen has a similar range of activities – hiking trails on the bare mountain, a growing cycling destination with a downhill park and, above all, Cykelvasan in August, which fills the valley with a race atmosphere – plus the advantage that services, restaurants and accommodation remain open to a greater extent even outside the winter months. Accommodation in Idre is mainly concentrated within the resort itself – convenient and close at hand, but with a limited range in terms of standard and size.
