When is the Sälen at full capacity – and when is it quietest during the school holidays?
- Full load: Week 8 and Week 9. Week 8 covers Skåne and the whole of eastern Central Sweden, whilst Week 9 covers Stockholm and Dalarna – Sälen’s own home market. Queues for the lifts in the morning and packed restaurants in the evening. - Most peaceful: Week 7 and Week 10 – the same snow, shorter queues. The lifts open at 09.00 and close at 16.30 during the school holidays; selected lifts run until 18.00 – when the lifts open and close.
- The snow: February–March is the time of year when snow is most certain in winter – the weather in Sälen.
Book well in advance - otherwise options are limited
The school holiday weeks are the first to run out, often as early as autumn. Here’s how it works when you want to Rent a holiday home in Sälen during the winter holidays:
- The whole house is yours. We rent out entire mountain cottages for 8–24 guests; we never rent out individual rooms. Bed linen, towels and a final clean are included in all cottages; made-up beds are an optional extra.
- Payment: 20 %: A deposit of % of the rent, payable within five days, confirms the booking; the balance is due no later than 60 days before arrival. If you book within 90 days of arrival, the full amount is payable at the time of booking. Full details can be found in booking, payment and deposit.
- Cancellation: If cancelled more than 60 days before arrival, the rent will be refunded minus a 6,000 kr administration fee; if cancelled closer to the arrival date, no refund will be given. These terms make no exception for school holidays – please take out travel insurance.
- Arrival and departure: Check-in from 16.00, check-out by 10.00 at the latest. Choose the right week - sports holidays, Christmas and New Year are different
The winter sports holiday is the third peak season of the winter after Christmas and New Year, and it is the only one that spans four weeks. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, choose week 7 or 10. If you want the liveliest villages and the most evening activities on offer, choose week 8 or 9. The location becomes even more important during the high season
During the school holidays, the situation determines how much time is spent on travelling by car and parking. Our houses are situated in Lindvallen (The Skiers Lodge with ski-in/ski-out access, the Stenlodgen next to the Olarslodgen at the Sälfjällstorget), in Tandådalen (Gattarstugan, approximately one kilometre from the nearest ski lift at Tandådalen; Villa Åsstigen, five minutes by car) and at Sälfjällstangen near Högfjället (Sälengodset, Fjällgodset, Olarslodgen and Winebunker).
