Who goes to the mountains without skis?
Those who tag along with the group but don’t ski, those who’ve had their fill of skiing for now, the couple who want the sauna and the peace and quiet, the family with young children, and everyone who comes in the summer and autumn when the ski lifts aren’t running. What they all have in common is that the accommodation is the highlight of the trip: a private house with a kitchen, sauna and open fire makes for fulfilling days even without the slopes, and the house costs the same regardless of whether you ski or not.
Winter without skiing
Winter activities for those who don’t ski: dog sledding and snowmobile safaris from Högfjället, walking in the snow on ploughed roads and trails, Experium with an adventure pool, spa and bowling in Lindvallen, lunch at the mountain restaurants and the hot tub as darkness falls at three. For those who do want to give it a go, there are cross-country trails and a ski school; those who don’t can look forward to an evening in good company. Expect cold and dark conditions: January has a daily average temperature of −6 degrees in the mountains.
Without skis in summer and autumn
From the end of April to the end of November, the whole of Sälen is a non-skiing destination, available at off-peak rates – from 21,250 SEK for a short week (Sunday–Thursday) in Olarslodgen or Stenlodgen, with the whole house to yourselves. Hiking trails, Bike Park and Trail Park from June, fishing in the Transtrand conservation area, swimming in the mountain lakes, and in September and October, autumn colours and quiet trails. Trollskogen in Hundfjället and the Trail Park are open daily until 1 November.
