The character
The slopes – Trollskogen to Väggen
Trollskogen is a 1.5-kilometre-long woodland area with winding paths, over 800 trolls and a gentle slope that even young skiers can manage; since the winter of 2024/25, a new button lift has been running up to the Lyktan restaurant and from there down through the forest. The children’s area, Trollbäckstorget, features a moving walkway, button lifts, gentle slopes, a ski school and a toboggan run. At the other end of the scale is Väggen: a black run, approximately 500 metres long, with a vertical drop of 202 metres and a gradient of up to around 45 degrees, for advanced skiers only and open during the day only. Slope map and evening skiing
The 2026/27 season runs from 11 December to 11 April. The lifts will run from 09.00 to 15.30 until 5 February and from 09.00 to 16.30 thereafter; from 20 December, selected lifts will run until 18.00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. On Fridays from 18 December to 9 April, there is a ‘Corduroy Morning’ session from 07.30 to 09.00. The cross-country trails at Hundfjället cover 9 kilometres in two loops, 2.5 kilometres of which are floodlit. At Hundfjällstorget, you’ll find the SkiStar Lodge Hundfjället with the West Express right outside the entrance, Frost Spa and restaurants; on the slopes, you can eat at Lyktan, Våffelstugan or Fompes charcoal grill. Stay in Hundfjället
We do not have a house in Hundfjället itself. The nearest accommodation is Villa Åsstigen, which sleeps 12 guests, five minutes’ drive away with the MOGG trails right on the doorstep, and Gattarstugan, which sleeps 24 guests in Tandådalen, which is connected to Hundfjället via the connecting lifts. Hundfjället versus Lindvallen
Hundfjället and Lindvallen are two separate lift systems: Hundfjället is linked to Tandådalen, the Lindvallen with Högfjället, and to travel between the two pairs you take the Ski & Bathing Bus or a car – a journey of 14–17 kilometres taking around 20 minutes. Lindvallen is the largest, with Experium, Magic Mountain and evening skiing every day; Hundfjället features Trollskogen, Väggen and quieter evenings. For younger skiers, Trollskogen is a must-visit. This magical area at the top of the ski system is filled with over 450 wooden trolls and figures brought to life by sound and light. At the bottom of Trollskogen is Trollens Fäbod where Valle puts on a show several days a week - a popular feature that kids love.
At Trollbäckstorget you'll find a perfect beginners' area with slow button lifts, easy slopes and conveyor belts for the little ones. There's also a sledging hill, warming hut and café where you can take a well-deserved break. Facilities include toilets, barbecue area and SkiStarshop with everything you might need for a day on the slopes.
For the Adventurous
If you're looking for more of a challenge, there's ”Väggen” - one of Sweden's steepest slopes that offers a real challenge even for experienced skiers. Hundfjället's Fun Ride is a specially designed slope with jumps, bumps and velodromes suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers. For those who want to explore park skiing, the nearest Snow Park is in Östra Tandådalen, which is easily reached by the Skid & Badbussen bus or via transport lifts.

The story
History and character of Hundfjället
Hundfjället has a rich history that stretches far back in time. The area has traditionally been important for Sami culture and reindeer herding, and traces of this history can still be seen in the landscape and place names. During the 20th century, Sälenfjällen gradually developed into a tourist destination, but it was only in the latter part of the century that Hundfjället established itself as a modern ski area.
Today, Hundfjället is an integral part of SkiStar Sälen, but has managed to preserve its unique character and charm. Unlike the more commercial parts of Sälen, Hundfjället offers a more genuine mountain experience where nature is at the centre and the pace is somewhat slower.

Hundfjället is approximately 35 mil from Stockholm and 45 mil from Gothenburg. The nearest major airport is Scandinavian Mountains Airport, just 20 minutes’ drive away. There are transfer services available from the airport to Hundfjället and other parts of Sälen.
By car
From Stockholm: Take the E18 towards Oslo, turn off towards Borlänge/Mora and then follow road 66 towards Sälen.
From Gothenburg: Take the E45 north towards Karlstad, continue towards Torsby and then road 71 towards Sälen.
Public transport
The mountain express offers bus connections from several major cities directly to Sälen during the winter season.
