Stöten

What is Stöten – and is it Sälen?

Stöten is one of Sälenfjällens’s six resorts, according to Visit Dalarna, alongside Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, Hundfjället and Kläppen, and is situated in the municipality of Malung-Sälen. The resort is operated by Stöten within Sälen AB, not by SkiStar, and sells its own lift pass, the Stöten SkiPass. SkiStar’s Sälen SkiPass is valid in the four SkiStar areas – ski resorts in Sälen. How the line is usually drawn: Is Stöten part of Sälen?

Stöten – our own resort with its own lift pass

The area is known for its authentic mountain atmosphere and more relaxed pace, with slopes suitable for the whole family and a children’s area with a ski school.

The 2026/27 season runs from 10 December to 11 April; the lifts run from 09.00 to 15.30, the floodlit runs are open until 18.00 every day, and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays there is early-morning skiing from 07.30 to 09.00. The cross-country trails cover 47 kilometres, of which the 3-kilometre ‘Ljusrundan’ is floodlit until 23.00. Afterski: Brasseriet, Tipi Bar and fondue evenings at Fjällkåtan. A season ticket costs 8,295 kronor for adults in 2026/27.

Winter off-piste – cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding

Summers

Summer in Stöten – hiking and cycling in mountain terrain

Once the snow has melted, Stöten becomes a starting point for hiking and cycling in the mountains, with trails beginning right at the complex. Summer at Sälen is quiet in a way that winter never is, and the mountain cabin serves just as well as a base then: long days out and about, dinner at home and a sauna in the evening.

Suggested routes can be found in the guidebooks hiking in Sälen and summer in Sälen, and anyone looking for a bit of pace will find Sälen’s cycle park in Lindvallen.

The history of Stöten

The Stöten ski resort opened in 1976, ten years after Hundfjället, and in 1990 a World Cup slalom event was held here. The fact that the area is still run with its own ski lift system and its own ski pass goes some way towards explaining the more laid-back atmosphere. The full story of how Sälen grew from mountain pastures into a ski resort can be found on the page about History of Sälen.
