Why you should travel to Sälen with dogs
Sälen is not only one of Sweden's most popular mountain destinations - it's also one of the best areas for travelling with dogs. There's access to nature right on your doorstep, all year round. Great trails for walking, snow-covered roads for winter play, forests to explore and lakes to swim in during the summer.
Unlike many other holiday resorts, Sälen is also equipped for dog owners. There are several cafés with outdoor seating that welcome dogs, well-stocked shops with dog accessories and close proximity to a vet in case of an accident.
Taking your dog on holiday is more than just practical - it gives the whole family peace of mind and enhances the experience. When your dog feels good, you feel good.
Compare the dog-friendly properties
Three of our nine houses allow dogs during standard stays – but not during events or parties. All are rented as whole houses, with one group per house.
- Sälengodset, Old Sälfjällstangen – 21 guests, 9 bedrooms. Indoor and outdoor hot tubs, sauna, two kitchens, secure ski storage. The plot faces the mountains and is south-facing; cross-country ski trails right outside the house. Weekly rates from 29,500 SEK in low season, 82,500 SEK in winter. Sälengodset
- Olarslodgen, Sälfjällstorget – 21 guests, 8 bedrooms, three kitchens spread over three floors. Within walking distance of ski lifts, restaurants, a chemist’s and a supermarket – you won’t need a car on holiday. Cleared roads for your morning walk. Weekly rates from 30,375 SEK in low season, 72,500 SEK in winter. Olarslodgen
- Gattarstugan, Tandådalen – 24 guests, 11 bedrooms. Wood-fired sauna, outdoor hot tub and relaxation building on the plot; trails and snowmobile tracks nearby; within walking distance of the Tandådalen slopes. Weekly rates from 30,988 SEK in low season, 65,000 SEK in winter. Gattarstugan
The same applies to all three: dogs are allowed in all rooms but not on beds or furniture; they must be kept on a lead on the property and in communal areas; and they must not be left alone in the house for long periods. We do not charge an extra fee for dogs; as a general rule, a maximum of two dogs per booking, with more permitted on request. Fjällgodset, Winebunker, Stenlodgen, Villa Åsstigen and The Skiers Lodge do not accept dogs.
What does ‘dog-friendly cottage’ mean with us?
The fact that dogs are allowed is the least of it; what makes your stay easy are floors and hallways that can cope with wet paws, space for a towel and paw cleaning just inside the door, underfloor heating that dries fur and clothes, and a garden or path outside for that late-evening walk. Nothing for the dog is provided in the cottages – please bring a bed, food bowl, food, towels and poo bags – but bed linen, towels and a final clean for you are included, and you are responsible for cleaning up after the dog yourselves during your stay. Dog-friendly cottages are few and far between and book up early during Christmas, New Year, the winter half-term and Easter; please include your dog in your enquiry so that the fee and rules are stated in the confirmation. There are walking routes from all three cottages: ploughed roads in winter, trails and forest paths in summer, and mountain lakes to cool off in.

How to plan a successful mountain holiday with your dog
Taking your dog to the mountains is usually easy - but it takes a bit of planning to get it right. Here are some tips from us and our previous guests:
Packing & preparation
- Pack for both weather and rest: bring extra towels, sleeping mats and maybe a blanket for the sofa cosy
- Take care of your paws: use a paw pad in winter and check your paws after every walk
- Travel safely: have your insurance details with you and contact your vet before travelling if you are unsure
In the mountain environment
- Keep your dog on a lead in protected areas: especially during spring and summer when wildlife is vulnerable
- Always pick up after your dog. The mountain environment is sensitive and worth protecting
- The nearest small animal clinic is located at Malung – please check opening hours and out-of-hours services before you travel
Did you know? In the Sälenområdet area, there are several signposted trails where dogs are particularly welcome. We’ve summarised the rules regarding lead requirements, reindeer and mountain terrain in the guide on walking the dog in Sälenfjällen.
