When people say “Sälen” they usually mean the whole mountain destination in the north-west Dalarna: Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, Hundfjället - and Stöten. In that sense, Stöten is absolutely part of Sälen: the same mountain range, similar environment and the same type of trip with accommodation close to the slopes, children's areas, cross-country trails and views of the bare mountain. At the same time, Stöten is a separate resort with its own organisation, restaurants, activities and lift pass system. This means that the SkiStar passes for Lindvallen/Högfjället/Tandådalen/Hundfjället are not valid in Stöten, and that the Stöten card is not valid on the slopes of SkiStar-a practical detail that is good to keep in mind when planning your week.
Where is Stöten?
Geographically, Stöten is located north of the central Sälen areas. By car, it generally takes about 30-40 minutes from Lindvallen to Stöten depending on the starting point, road conditions and traffic, and about the same time from Scandinavian Mountains Airport. This proximity means that many people staying in “Sälen” like to take a day trip to Stöten to vary the skiing, while Stöten guests sometimes do the reverse. Ski buses and shuttles run seasonally, but the car is usually most convenient if you want to switch between systems.
Why choose Stöten?
What makes many people choose Stöten is the combination of wide, family-friendly skiing and real challenges in the steeper sections, often with very nice views of the Norwegian border mountains. The accommodation is largely ski in/ski out, the pace is a little calmer than in the most central parts of Sälen, and the overall feeling is genuinely mountain.
