Hundfjället is one of Sälen's cosiest areas with a clear family profile. It features Trollskogen - Sälen's best-loved children's adventure - as well as children's and beginner slopes, several blue and red runs, modern lift capacity, ski hire, ski school, restaurants and cafés. The area is connected to Tandådalen, so you can easily vary the skiing during the same day even for more advanced skiers. In the area you can also rent large cabins.
Ski map
The current piste map showing open lifts and runs is available on the SkiStar page for Hundfjället, which is updated daily during the season: SkiStar – Hundfjället. Hundfjället is one of SkiStar’s four areas in Sälen and is connected to Tandådalen via the T17 and H14 connecting lifts; the same SkiPass applies in all four areas, and the whole of Sälen has 105 lifts and 101 runs.
The slopes
The slopes range from the children’s area at Trollbäckstorget, with moving walkways and button lifts, via Trollskogen – a 1.5-kilometre-long forest trail with a gentler slope and over 800 trolls – to Väggen, a black run with a gradient of up to around 45 degrees. Fun Ride, featuring jumps, moguls and velodromes, is located on run 6; the nearest Snow Park is the largest one at Sälen, in Östra Tandådalen. The two large chairlifts are the West Express, an eight-seater chairlift from Hundfjällstorget, and the East Express; the Väggen cable car runs up to Väggen. SkiStar does not publish area-specific figures for runs by colour; SVT’s piste report in December 2025 counted 23 runs in Hundfjället.
Evening skiing
The 2026/27 season runs from 11 December to 11 April. The ski lifts operate from 09.00 to 15.30 until 5 February and from 09.00 to 16.30 thereafter. From 20 December, selected lifts will run until 18.00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays; until 19 December, this applies to Fridays and Saturdays. On Christmas Eve, the lifts close at 14.00. On Fridays from 18 December to 9 April, selected lifts will open as early as 07.30 for ‘Corduroy Morning’, which is included in the SkiPass pass. The Väggen pass does not include floodlit lifts and is valid for daytime use only.
Afterski in Hundfjället
SkiStar does not list any venues in Hundfjället as après-ski spots; the evening is spent in the lounge bar at SkiStar Lodge Hundfjället or in the chalet. If you’re looking for a classic après-ski experience, Tandådalen’s Wärdshus – which has been serving après-ski from 3.00 pm since 1969 – is three kilometres away. Eating on the slopes: Restaurant Lyktan at the top by the new button lift, Våffelstugan, Fompes charcoal grill and Korv & Bread at Trollstugan; in the square: Forest, Bistro H, Mary’s Burgers and Bullar & Bröd. SkiStar Lodge Hundfjället features the Frost Spa with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and a gym.
Skiing in Hundfjället
Hundfjället is located in the western part of Sälen and offers a cosy mountain village feeling where most things can be reached on foot or on skis. The slopes range from very gentle children's slopes to longer blue and red runs with great views towards Norway. The lifts are modern and make it easy to get around without waiting times. A big advantage is the connection to Tandådalen - via lifts and trails, the entire joint system is at your disposal. The wall
Väggen is one of Sweden’s steepest slopes: approximately 500 metres long, with a vertical drop of 202 metres, a gradient of up to around 45 degrees; it is a black run and is for advanced skiers only. Lift: the Väggen lift from the bottom. All about the slope: Väggen to Sälen.
Family friendly & flexible
Hundfjället is built for families and beginners. Roller conveyor belts, button lifts, play areas and clear meeting points make it easy to get around. The ski school has well-adapted groups and also private lessons for faster development. Service & food on site
At Hundfjället's square you will find ski hire, a shop, skipass sales as well as cafés and restaurants for lunch or a snack in your ski boots. Everything you need is within walking distance. For longer lunches with a view or dinner in the chalet, you can also order private chef or catering directly to your accommodation.
Cross-country skiing & winter activities
Several cross-country trails start close to Hundfjället - from short tours to longer trips over the bare mountain. During stable winter, guided tours are offered snowmobile safaris and snowshoeing, and there are shelters and barbecue areas for coffee breaks with a view. Many accommodations also have saunas or hot tubs, making recovery easy after an active day.
Evening life & après-ski
Hundfjället's evenings are characterised by cosiness rather than parties. There's family-friendly après-ski on some days, but most people choose to cosy up in a cabin with a sauna, dinner and a view. If you want more excitement Lindvallen and Tandådalen is just a short ski bus or car journey away, so you can combine the tranquillity here with pleasures elsewhere. Summer & autumn in Hundfjället
When the snow melts, Hundfjället becomes a green and tranquil mountain area. Trollskogen lives on as a fairytale walk, and the trails towards Högfjället and Östfjället offer hikes of all levels of difficulty.
