The family

Is Sälen child-friendly?

Yes – it is Sweden’s most well-developed mountain resort for families with children: four SkiStar areas in a SkiPass where children up to the age of 6 ski for free, children’s areas with conveyor belts at every square, Trollskogen, Experium and ski schools in all areas, and entire chalets where the family can stay on their own. How Sälen compares to Idre, Vemdalen and Branäs for families with children: Which mountain resort is best suited to families with children?.

Child-friendly slopes

Lindvallen features Valleberget at Experiumtorget, one of Europe’s largest children’s play areas, with button lifts, moving walkways and a toboggan run; Hundfjället features Trollbäckstorget and Trollskogen, a 1.5 km ski run through the forest with over 800 trolls; Högfjället has a children’s area below the hotel with Knattesvängen, and Tandådalen Valles Skidland by the square. Magic Mountain on Valleberget is lit up every evening from 5 pm to 6 pm from week 51 until 7 March 2027. Ski school and childcare

SkiStar’s ski school has meeting points at all the squares, group lessons for children aged three and over, and private lessons; during Valle’s Family Weeks from 9 to 31 January 2027, ski school, hire and SkiPass are included for children up to and including the age of 6 when booking with SkiStar. Childcare is not provided as a central service – this can be arranged by hiring a babysitter to come to your accommodation or by booking a half-day at the ski school. Summers

Summer in Sälen with children - the green magic of the mountains

When the snow melts, Sälen is transformed into a lush paradise for family adventures. Summer offers a slower pace but just as many opportunities for exciting experiences for young and old alike.

Hiking, fishing, cycling

Sälenfjällen offers fantastic hiking trails adapted for families with children. Try the easily accessible Södra Kungsleden trail, the first few kilometres of which are paved and also suitable for prams. Along the trails there are often rest areas with barbecue facilities and shelters where you can take a break and enjoy your packed lunch with wonderful views.

For families keen on cycling, Sälen offers a well-developed network of cycle routes for different levels. Hire bikes on site and set off on exciting trails through forests and over mountains. Both Lindvallen and Kläppen have special children's areas for cycling where the youngest can practise their technique in a safe environment.

Fishing is another popular summer activity for the whole family. In Lindvallens fäbod there is a fishing lake where children can try their luck at fishing, often with good chances of catching a bite. There are also barbecue areas where you can cook your catch right by the lake.

Tips

Concrete tips for a successful stay with children

After years of experience in helping families enjoy successful mountain holidays, we've put together our top tips for a stress-free and memorable stay in Sälen with kids.

Plan for rest days between activities, especially if you have younger children. A day at a slower pace will re-energise and reduce the risk of tired and cranky children. Use rest days to explore the local area, visit a local restaurant or just cosy up in the cottage.

Also remember to adapt the activities to the age and ability of the children. Start with shorter skiing sessions or hikes and increase gradually. Don't forget to take regular breaks for refreshments and re-energising - it makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone.
